Description:
Finn has escaped from the terrible living Prison of Incarceron, but its memory torments him, because his brother Keiro is still inside. Outside, Claudia insists he must be king, but Finn doubts even his own identity. Is he the lost prince Giles? Or are his memories no more than another construct of his imprisonment? And can you be free if your friends are still captive? Can you be free if your world is frozen in time? Can you be free if you don’t even know who you are? Inside Incarceron, has the crazy sorcerer Rix really found the Glove of Sapphique, the only man the Prison ever loved. Sapphique, whose image fires Incarceron with the desire to escape its own nature. If Keiro steals the glove, will he bring destruction to the world? Inside. Outside. All seeking freedom. Like Sapphique.
Review:
I think I actually liked this book more than the first one, Incarceron! Another dystopian novel, this one keeps you on the edge of your seat with twists and turns and an amazingly complex world.
Pros:
- Sapphique has amazing pacing, making it difficult to put down. Each chapter seems to end with a cliffhanger, leaving you flipping to the next page to see where you’ll go next.
- The characters are well developed, each with his/her own voice and point of view. Catherine has a great way of weaving together the storylines, keeping everything fresh and seamless, and her third-person omniscient story-telling is perfect.
- The world-building is top notch. Everything from the “Era” of the outside world to the details and random places of the Prison (my favorites were the dollhouse and chess board) leave you firmly entrenched in the setting.
Cons:
There’s really not much I can fault about this book! But if I could pick two things, I’d have to say:
- I wish there’d been a little bit more romance in the novel. The characters have strong feelings for each other, but Attia is the only one who has an obvious crush on Finn, and even then there is really no romantic elements.
- I really wanted to know if Finn was indeed Giles or if his memories had been planted!
